With the recent exits of Burnley mainstays Jack Cork and Johann Gudmundsson, Charlie Taylor and Jay Rodriguez’s futures are also up in the air.
Cork and Gudmundsson made their final appearances for the team on Sunday during the club’s 2-1 loss to Nottingham Forest, saying an emotional farewell to Turf Moor.
Additionally, Taylor and Rodriguez have expiring contracts this summer, but the team just stated that negotiations are “continuing” on their futures.
Although manager Vincent Kompany is optimistic that a solution will be reached, it is unclear whether the seasoned pair would actually sign new contracts.
“I don’t know, but they’ve been at the club for a long time so I’m pretty sure we can have a conversation and do what’s best for them but also the club primarily,” Kompany responded when asked if he expected Taylor and Rodriguez to stay.
“That will transpire during the upcoming weeks.”
Between Cork and Gudmundsson, the Clarets are losing a total of 954 career appearances, but Kompany is optimistic that others will step up to cover for them.
“Like every club, there’s always a moment when it can end, so it’s never an easy moment,” he remarked.
We’ll have to depend on other players’ success. This season, Josh Cullen’s leadership development has been enormous. Hopefully, we will have new leaders as Dara O’Shea has climbed to a significant level of leadership and others are still on the rise.
“It’s important to acknowledge the contribution they made to the team, and it was in their best interests to end their career with their loved ones and the supporters.”
