Doctors told him he’d never play NRL again

Cody Ramsey has taken his first step towards an NRL return, joining St George Illawarra teammates for his first field training session in 18 months after his career was thrown into jeopardy by a severe illness.

The Dragons speedster has endured a series of major medical issues over the past 18 months, severely affecting his life and leading doctors to believe he would never return to the NRL.

While physically Ramsey is still a shadow of his former self, his determination to prove the experts wrong was rewarded when he joined his teammates on the field in Wollongong for his first ball-work session in a year and a half.

“Without a doubt, it was a big step for him,” Dragons coach Shane Flanagan told this masthead on Monday. “It was amazing to see the smile on his face and how much it meant to him. Look, to be honest, he is a long way away from playing in the NRL, but for everything he has been through, it was just great to see him back healthy and with the boys.”

The Dragons ruled Ramsey out for all of 2023 and 2024 in line with medical advice after his diagnosis in late 2022, but refused to cut ties with the talented outside back.

The club decided to extend his contract, splitting the final year of his deal over two seasons to keep him at the Dragons until at least the end of 2025.
