Tyrell Sloan extends St George Illawarra Dragons contract

Tyrell Sloan has extended his stay at St George Illawarra, officially agreeing to a fresh two-year contract with the club.

The local junior has enjoyed a much-improved 2024 campaign under coach Shane Flanagan, helping the Dragons push for a spot inside the NRL’s top-eight.

Sloan’s extension will see him remain in the Red V until at least the end of 2026, and comes just weeks after representative forward Jaydn Su’A inked a new deal.

The 22-year-old has developed crucial areas of his game this season, particularly in defence, making 92 tackles for the year at 86 per cent efficiency.

Flanagan praised Sloan’s improvement and believes the best is yet to come.

“Tyrell’s an exciting young player who continues to learn and improve every week,” he said in a statement on Thursday afternoon.

“His efforts to improve all parts of his game this year have been really pleasing.

“We’re looking forward to seeing him continue to develop at the Dragons over the coming seasons.”

To go with his improved efforts in defence, Sloan has crossed for eight tries and set up another four in his 12 appearances to date, while upping his involvement out of trouble and averaging 109 run metres and three tackle breaks per game.

The fullback position has been a tough one for the Dragons to nail down in recent seasons, with Matt Dufty moving on at the end of 2021 and Cody Ramsey remaining sidelined due to illness for the past two seasons, opening the door for Sloan.

The electric Dapto Canaries product joins the likes of Su’A, Francis Molo and Moses Suli in committing to the Saints since Flanagan took over the head coaching role.

The next cab off the rank for Flanagan and St George Illawarra will be deciding the future of veteran forward Jack de Belin, who remains unsigned for 2025 and beyond despite an outstanding start to the campaign.

The 33-year-old has been a standout for the Dragons this year and co-captained the team in their upset win over Penrith last weekend.
