This year has seen a flurry of managerial “silly season,” with teams like Sunderland still debating who would man the iconic dugout. Clubs may be looking to fill more positions than simply head coach, though, as the majority of hierarchies hope to bolster their entire coaching staff.
Stoke City is one team that has taken that action today, having announced the hiring of Chris Cohen as their first team coach. The former Nottingham Forest mainstay joins the Potters from League One club Lincoln City.
The 37-year-old entered Forest’s academy system as soon as his playing career ended in 2018 and worked his way up to manager of the Under 21 team. After an effective year in that capacity, he teamed up with longtime friend Nathan Jones to take on the post of assistant manager at Luton Town. Later, he moved into the Premier League alongside Jones when Jones advanced to Southampton.
After spending a limited period of time with the team the previous autumn, Cohen subsequently joined the Imps in early January of this year. Results improved as soon as he signed to back Michael Skubala, and the team embarked on a 16-game winning streak. Despite not being able to qualify for the playoffs this season, there is a lot of hope for the Lincolnshire team’s upcoming campaign because of their youthful roster and talented coaching staff.
Despite the fact that first team coaches have a variety of responsibilities, one of the man from Norwich’s greatest assets is his capacity to watch games in progress and use that information to provide his teams with insightful coaching.
