On May 21, Stoke revealed their complete list of players retained. Tyrese Campbell, a striker, left the team after eight years, 164 games, and 36 goals.
Although Schumacher only placed 17th in the Championship in 2023–2024, there were some encouraging signals toward the end of the season. Nevertheless, Schumacher must make some difficult decisions regarding who to retain and who to let go.
While some new players, including Wouter Burger and Bae Jun-ho, have impressed their new manager, former manager Alex Neil oversaw the signing of 19 players for the Potters last summer.
Even though Ben Gibson and Viktor Johansson from Rotherham United and Norwich City, respectively, have already joined his team, he still needs to let go of players who don’t have a long-term place in it. At Football League World, we’ve found two players who could leave with Campbell this summer, either permanently or on loan.
Daniel Johnson, an attacking midfielder, signed a two-year contract with the Potters last summer, rejoining his former Preston North End manager Neil. With eight years of Championship experience under his belt at the Lilywhites, Johnson seemed to be a perfect addition to the Potters’ roster.
Under Neil, he started 15 of Stoke’s first 18 Championship games, scoring his team’s first goal against Huddersfield Town and dishing out two assists. However, after 20 league games and the club sitting in 20th place after a run of six games without a victory, the Scot was fired.
