He will miss the chance at Burnley

With the remaining transfer window, Middlesbrough hopes to bolster their first team with a fourth addition.

Before the preseason had started, Boro brought in Luke Ayling, Delano Burgzorg, and Aidan Morris to start their 2024 summer operations in a big way.

Since then, Michael Carrick and company have eased their recruitment efforts, but they still intend to bring a new player to Riverside Stadium this summer.

Middlesbrough is still in need of a striker, and Tommy Conway, a forward for Bristol City, would be the ideal candidate.

On Monday, July 29, Boro and the 21-year-old were first connected. Then on Tuesday, information of Middlesbrough’s offer for Conway surfaced.

It is said that the Teessiders made a £5 million offer for the Scotsman, but a significant amount of that amount was contingent on certain clauses.

Tommy Conway has been ordered to choose Middlesbrough over Burnley.

Conway, who declined a new contract this summer and has since been training with the Robins U21s, appeared to be in the clear for Middlesbrough.

Then, earlier this week, it was rumored that Burnley was also interested in signing Conway.

The Clarets were in negotiations with City on a possible trade deal for the player, which might include Luke McNally and Scott Twine, even though Boro was offering a straight cash deal.

Now, in an interview with the You Are My Boro podcast, Dominic Shaw, a journalist for Northern Echo, explains why Conway ought to choose Middlesbrough over Burnley this summer.

“Burnley aren’t short on center-forwards; their attack is stacked,” he declared. So, if you’re Conway and you’re wondering where you might play football more, where’s a good place to start, in my opinion?

That’s not a slight against Burnley at all; I’m simply focusing on Boro.

How many times and with how many examples have we discussed in the past several months regarding players who have joined Boro or climbed through the ranks there and done so quickly?

“Morgan Rogers is the obvious example but then there’s Rav van den Berg, Hayden Hackney, and there are others aren’t there.

“This is a big move that he has to get right. I would think Boro would back themselves in being able to sell a move to the Riverside.”

Will Middlesbrough’s Tommy Conway make his debut?

Burnley has plenty of offensive alternatives, and Shaw is correct that Conway might find it difficult to get consistent playing time.

Though they are not quite as loaded in that area as Middlesbrough is, the striker might run into a similar problem at the Riverside.

With a 4-2-3-1 formation, Carrick starts just one center forward per game for his Boro club.

Emmanuel Latte Lath, who scored 11 goals in his last 12 games to close out 2023–24, will start as the team’s primary number nine in the upcoming campaign.

Josh Coburn is another competent backup option for Middlesbrough, but at age 21, he will require regular play to further his development.

However, Conway would most likely not start ahead of Latte Lath even if Coburn is sent out on loan for 2024–2025.

Conway might not be better off joining Boro this summer if he wants to be a consistent starter, like he did at Bristol City.
