Paul Warne comments on Ebou Adams as TalkSPORT pundits stunned by Derby County midfielder’s miss
Derby County continued a fine start to the season with a 1-0 win over Cardiff City on Saturday afternoon.
The Rams produced a superb performance before the international break, hammering Bristol City 3-0 at Pride Park.
The superb home form continued on Saturday as Paul Warne saw his Derby County side pick up a 1-0 win.
Kenzo Goudmijn scored the only goal of the game, calmly slotting home from Callum Elder’s cross in the first half.
Elder has praised Goudmijn for his impact since joining Derby and his goal proved to be the winner.
Derby could have made it 2-0 but saw an incredible chance go begging in rather embarrassing fashion.
With Cardiff pushing for a late equaliser, the Bluebirds threw players forward to try and find a leveller.
One clearance up the pitch saw Cardiff hesitate and midfielder Ebou Adams was charging like a freight train towards the ball.
Adams, who ironically joined Derby from Cardiff after a strong loan spell, got there first after a lung-busting run from his own box and was in the clear, open goal at his mercy.
The Gambian seemed to rush the finish though and with no goalkeeper in sight, Adams rolled the ball wide of the target.
Adams would have wanted the ground to swallow him up but, fortunately, the miss didn’t matter too much in the end.
Adams has now admitted that he doesn’t know how he missed, apologising to Derby fans in the process.
Boss Warne has now moved to defend Adams whilst speaking to the club’s official website.
Warne talked up the strength of the culture in the Derby dressing room whilst praising Adams for putting his body on the line for the cause in ‘brave’ fashion.
Warne didn’t really mention the miss but praised Adams for an ‘excellent’ all-round performance, believing that a goal would have just capped off a great display.
“One of our strengths is that we try and build a culture where everyone behind the scenes, staff and players are all trying to pull together for the team,” said Warne.
“And Ebou is one of them – he’s a sacrificer. I think he’s the only player we have who would have been brave enough to go for the head and chase after it. And it would have been fitting if he had scored today with that performance. He was excellent,” he added.
TalkSPORT pundits react to Adams miss
Unsurprisingly, Adams’ miss has gone viral over the last 24 hours.
Nobody can quite believe that Adams managed to miss the target and TalkSPORT pundits have been all over it.
Speaking on TalkSPORT (14/09, 7:14pm), Jamie O’Hara and Jason Cundy shared their thoughts.
O’Hara suggested that it was the ‘worst miss’ he has ever seen whilst Cundy simply branded the miss as ‘terrible’.
“If you haven’t seen this, this is the worst miss I have ever seen. He is through on goal, has done brilliantly to nod it over the keeper on the halfway line, and he is running through. Literally he is the only person in that half, and he misses,” said O’Hara.
“It’s an open goal. It’s a terrible, terrible miss,” added Cundy.
This miss may follow Adams around for a while but he knows that he will receive nothing but love around Derby.
Warne absolutely loves what Adams provides in midfield and Rams fans will certainly get behind him moving forward.
Adams racked up four tackles, two interceptions, one clearance and won four aerial duels – more than any Derby teammate.
Warne won’t want that miss to define Adams or his performance and made sure to praise his all-round display in another home win.
