American sprint legend Michael Johnson has explained why the 2024 track and field season was the highlight of the sport.

The four-time Olympic champion noted that the Paris Olympic Games, the emergence of different personalities on the track and the SPRINT Netflix docuseries have contributed to making track and field interesting. He added that rivalries being renewed in different meetings was also a sight to marvel at

Johnson singled out Jakob Ingebrigtsen and Josh Kerr at the Olympic Games and saw the emergence of a new Olympic champion Cole Hocker. He also pointed out the rivalry between Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone and Femke Bol and how Anna Cockrell claimed a silver medal at the Paris Olympic Games.

The American legend was also in awe of Quincy Hall and Quincy Wilson and the record-breaking seasons for Faith Kipyegon and Mondo Duplantis. He noted that it was amazing watching Noah Lyles and Sha’Carri Richardson despite their mixed seasons and was in awe of Letsile Tebogo and Julien Alfred, the rising stars.

Following the impressive season, the former 200m world record holder was quick to note that his track league, Grand Slam Track, will be out to capitalize on that.

At the moment, Johnson has already signed several athletes including Fred Kerley, Kenny Bednarek, Josh Kerr and Yared Nuguse. Melissa Jefferson and Sydney Mclaughlin-Levrone are the only female athletes who have signed with the track league.
