In the US, Hulkenberg “maximized” his race, but Magnussen left, annoyed with “messy” strategy calls.
AUSTIN, TEXAS – OCTOBER 20: German driver Nico Hulkenberg, who is driving the (27) Haas F1 VF-24 Ferrari, had a great weekend in Austin. Both cars scored in the Sprint, and Hulkenberg increased the team’s Grand Prix point total. However, if Kevin Magnussen had also scored, it might have been much better. In Texas, team manager Ayao Komatsu laments the “messy communication” between the driver and the team.
The American team brought a host of upgrades to the US Grand Prix, which seemed to move the car forward in the tight midfield pecking order – and crucially ahead of RB, their championship rivals. Haas went into the weekend trailing RB by three points, but ended it ahead by two. Hulkenberg was pleased with the progress made as he climbed from 11th on the grid to finish eighth, managing a long opening stint that paved the way for the German to jump ahead of some of his rivals.
